Airbnb has acquired last-minute hotel booking app HotelTonight, the company announced today. An agreement was signed for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition comes essentially a year after Airbnb first launched Airbnb Plus, as another move on the traditional hotel industry.
Airbnb Plus is a subsection of its service that includes boutique hotels and traditional bed and breakfasts.
The company has significantly worked over the years to expand its home rental marketplace into a travel platform. Online marketplace and hospitality service provider seek expanding business and entry into certain markets which have strict housing rules around who is allowed to rent their property for short while stays.
Working with HotelTonight would also make it easier for the company to add more hotel availabilities.
HotelTonight offers day-of hotel reservations at discounted rates. Company’s booking app and the website offers listings in over 1,700 cities in over 35 countries.
Founded in 2010, HotelTonight was last valued at $450 million. Whereas Airbnb market value has been estimated at $31 billion.
According to a press release, the HotelTonight app will still operate independently for now but the supplies will likely also be made available through Airbnb’s Plus portal.
