Avoid Consumption of Meat and Dairy to Save the Environment—Suggest Scientist

Meat and dairy are an important part of heritage and identity. However, rapidly growing consumption with increasing population is threatening the planet. A study conducted by researchers from the University of Oxford concluded that consumption is dangerously impacting our environment. Thus, it has left us with a choice: either the food market must become more sustainable, or we are on the edge of destroying the planet. Therefore, avoiding or reducing the consumption of meat and dairy products is a single most effective way to minimize one’s carbon footprint on the planet.

Moreover, the study also found that less consumption of meat and dairy in China, the European Union, and Australia combined would cut down the global farmland use by more than 75%. If we don’t cut down the amount of meat we eat, it’s time to start now. Here’s what we can follow:

  • Reduce meat and dairy consumption by 60% and try to find alternative proteins
  • Make fresh fruits and vegetables a bigger part of a diet to have rich-diet
  • Buy sustainable or organic fresh produce whenever possible, this will create a safe environment to some extent

With the increasing urbanization and growing middle-class population, people are consuming meat and dairy products exponentially. However, a vegan diet is more healthy and the best way to reduce human impact on earth involving greenhouse gases, eutrophication, and land and water use.

Rapidly industrializing countries have increased per capita and disposable income, thus, people can afford meat-rich western diets—at the cost to harm the planet by an increase in deforestation, the rise in the number of harmful greenhouse gases produced by livestock, and growing water and wastage pollution. Land that is used to grow cattle and feed cannot be used to grow any type of crops. The global population expected to reach 10 billion by the end of this century, these issues are only going to worsen the human life. The only way to save the earth is to change our eating habits.

Furthermore, livestock farming poses a significant threat to the planet as it produces a huge amount of greenhouse gas, methane, which directly results in loss of carbon-absorbing forests. Additionally, it requires a huge amount of water to sustain the livestock, for instance, 500 gm of beef is expected to require nearly 7000 liters of water.

On the other hand, consumer demand in this category is drastically increasing with an average growth rate of 8.1% in 2017. Some countries showed a small decline in the meat and dairy category in the same period. The U.K. has shown the lowest decrease in meat consumption worldwide. However, people preferring vegetarian food has risen to 360% in the last 10 years.

Still, a question arises, does shifting entirely to a plant-based diet is healthy? A vegan diet can provide a well-balanced diet. Moreover, green vegetables can solve many chronic health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

We are not saying to go for a completely meatless diet, or everyone adopt a “meatless” diet from the day itself. But we should pledge to consume less meat, developing “meat consciousness” environment. Shifting to more greenery diet will help tackle major environmental issues such as air and water pollution, climate change, and ocean dead zones among others. A collective effort to eat fewer meals with meat or dairy each week will have a huge positive impact on the planet health.
