India’s 305-run challenge for victory over South Africa

Centurion: India beat South Africa by 305 runs to win the first Test. The Indian team was bowled out for 174 in the second innings. Rishabh Pant’s 34 was the highest individual score of the innings. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Angidi and Marco Jensen were the fastest bowlers in Africa. Therefore, India, which was expected to take a lead of more than 400 runs at a time, could only challenge 305 runs. South Africa were 50 for two in 20 overs when the last news came.

India’s first innings ended at 327 and South Africa’s first innings at 197. That gave India a 130-run lead. Playing from there, Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for 4 runs. Shardul Thakur was sent to bat as there was little play left in the third day. He gave good support to Lokesh Rahul till the end of the day. But as the game started on the fourth day, India’s innings started slipping. Shardul returned with 10 runs while Rahul returned with 23 runs.

In the second session, the fast bowlers kept falling. Virat Kohli was dismissed for 18, Cheteshwar Pujara for 16 and Ajinkya Rahane for 20. Ravichandran Ashwin (14), Mohammad Shami (1) and Rishabh Pant (34) followed. Bumrah remained unbeaten on 7 but Siraj was dismissed for zero and Team India’s innings ended at 174. Navkha Marco Jensen and Kagiso Rabada both took 4-4 while Lungi Engidi picked up 2 wickets.
